Tough Love Starts with Breast Feeding

I recently visited a lactation nurse with my newborn baby and I learned so much. I've already nursed my two other children and thought I remembered how to do it, it's like riding a bike, right. Wrong. I showed up to the appointment in pain from a baby nursing like they do in the womb. They naturally just want to suck on a shallow finger. If I continued to let my daughter do this to me I would be crying every time I nursed. So what I learned is that "tough love" isn't just something you use on your teenagers when they act up, it starts at birth. You have to force your baby to stick more in their mouth even though they feel it is uncomfortable. Also, until you break their habit of shallow sucking you need to hold the back of their head so that they don't back up, because they will!
